May 3, 2007 NACOGDOCHES, Tex. - After having a record-breaking season, the Nicholls Outdoor Track and Field team hopes to have the same success at the conference championships, as the Colonels travel to the campus of Stephen F. Austin this weekend, home of the 2007 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Sophomore javelin thrower Leslie Bourgeois and freshman high jumper Chelsea Dockrey lead the way for the Colonels. Bourgeois, a Junior All-American, set an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying mark at each meet this season. Her best outing of the year came at the LSU Relays, when her toss of 151-03, placed her second behind Northwestern State's Dawn Comeaux. Dockrey heads to the conference championships as the Colonels' all-time leader in the high jump. She just missed the regional qualifying mark of 5-08.75 earlier this season, as she placed second overall in the Southern Miss Invite with a jump of 5-7.00.
The current team has placed its named in the record books this season, with top five performances on the all-time Nicholls list in a remarkable 13 different events. Head coach Scott Williamson is hoping to see more school records fall this weekend.
"Our team is really looking forward to the outdoor championships," commented Williamson. "This is the meet that we spend the entire year preparing for. Our team is very young and it will be interesting to see how they respond to the competition. We have a few athletes who have chances at winning an SLC championship in their respective events."
