NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Lady Colonel women's tennis squad opened the 2008 season on a high note Monday afternoon, claiming a 6-3 victory over Xavier.

Nicholls captured the doubles point as Anne-Claire Mullier and Natalia Zamora won their No. 2 doubles match 8-6 over Yuliem Dominguez and Colleen McArthur, while Sanja Stanojcic and Sumana Kaylanasundram picked up an 8-0 No. 3 doubles victory over Alexandra Broussard and Melissa Deloach.

Florina Nosca and Melissa Harrison fell 8-5 to Dominique Bell and Anastesia Opata in No. 1 doubles.

In singles action, the Lady Colonels saw wins at the three, four, five and six spots to take the victory from the Gold Rush.

Nosca dropped the No. 1 singles slot 6-3, 6-4 to Opata and Mullier fell 6-3, 6-3 to Bell at the No. 2 spot.

At No. 3, Zamora captured a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dominguez, while Harrison defeated Broussard 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 role. Rounding out the wins for the Lady Colonels, Stanojcic defeated McArthur 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 and Kalyanasundram took a 6-1, 6-0 win from Deloach.

The Lady Colonels improve to 1-0 on the young season, while the Gold Rush falls to 0-1. Nicholls will return to action Thursday, Jan. 31, traveling to Lafayette to face the Ragin' Cajuns.
