April 10, 2007 HORSESHOE BAY, Tex. - Sam Houston State erased a two-stroke deficit and built a seven-stroke lead by shooting a 300 on day two of the 2007 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship here on Tuesday. Final round play gets under way at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Ram Rock Course of the Horseshoe Bay Resort.
Lamar, which has won the last two and three of the last four SLC tournaments, led after day one by one stroke over Texas State, but carded a 309 on Tuesday. Texas State slipped all the way to a fourth-place tie after struggling with a second round 328. The Bobcats shot a 307 to open play on Monday.
SLC newcomer Central Arkansas is third (319-310--629) while fellow newcomer Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (309-326--635) is tied with Texas State after 36 holes.
McNeese State (636), Texas-San Antonio (656) and Nicholls (662) fill out the remaining tournament field.
SHSU (308-300--608) is looking for its second Southland title after capturing the 2004 crown.
Lamar's Therese Nilsson holds onto the top spot among the 40 individuals after posting a 75 on Tuesday. She slipped to four-over-par after shooting an even-par 71 over the 5,901-yard course on Monday. SHSU's Jennifer Heinz followed a 77 on Monday with a 71 on Tuesday to stay at plus-6 and move within two strokes of Nilsson for individual medalist honors.
UTSA's Laura Baker shot 74 on Tuesday and finds herself three strokes off the pace of Nilsson with a two-round score of 149 (75-74).
Daniele Dunlop leads all Lady Colonel golfers tied for 21st place with a 163. Jessica Marquart (166) follows in a tie for 29th place, as Theunette Van der Walt (167) closely follows in a tie for 31st place. Natalie Robinson (169) is currently in 35th place, while Emiley Patton (179) is in 39th place overall.
