FRISCO, Texas - Freshman Radu Ionescu earned Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year accolades and the doubles pair of Eric Fisher and Phenyo Matong was named Second Team Doubles All-Southland Conference it was announced Thursday afternoon. Ionescu, a Bucharest, Romania native, posted a 12-8 overall record at No. 1 singles with a 3-3 ledger in SLC action. The freshman combined with partner Vlad Popa for a 14-3 (4-1 SLC) doubles tally at No. 1 for the Colonels. Fisher, a sophomore from Jefferys Bay, South Africa, and Matong, a sophomore from Gaborone, Botswana, amassed a 14-3 No. 2 doubles record through the 2008 season, including going 4-1 in Southland Conference play. The No. 6-seeded Colonels will open up Southland Conference Tournament action Friday, taking on No. 3 Texas-San Antonio in round one action.
