LAKE CHARLES, La. - Junior Marty Reed and freshman Parham Booker each fired three straight rounds in the 70's at the 2008 Southland Conference Golf Tournament held at Gray Plantation, but it wasn't enough as the Nicholls Colonels finished in 10th place. Reed (T24 - 228) finished 12-over par with a 73, 79 and 76, while Booker (T27-229) was just one-shot back with a 13-over par and rounds of 75, 76 and 78. Other Colonel golfers included freshman Clay Shovan (T39 - 80, 80, 74 = 234), sophomore Ebenhaezer Van der Walt (47th - 85, 77, 79 = 241) and junior James Terrebonne (T49 - 82, 75, 86 = 243). After leading by 14 strokes after day 2 of competition, No. 22 Lamar doubled their lead on the last day of play, claiming their third consecutive title and 22nd overall. Sophomore Hugues Joannes (72-76-69=217) led the Cardinals by one stroke and tied for third, while teammates Justin Harding (77-69-72=218) and Russell Helson (76-68-74=218) tied for fourth overall. Senior Casey Clendenon (73-71-77=221) tied for eighth giving Lamar four players in the top eight. Tied for 27th, Leroux Ferriera's second (70) and third (75) round scores helped keep Lamar in the driver's seat in the second and final day of the tournament. Individual medalist honors came down to a two-hole playoff between Scott Kelly of Sam Houston State and Sigmundur Masson of McNeese State. Each finished the tournament tied at 215 and parred the first tie breaker hole at five each while a long shot on hole 18 cost Masson by one stroke as Kelly sunk a five foot put to claim his first individual champion of his career and the first by a Bearkat since 2004. Competition for second place in the tournament was as close as individual medalist as Texas State and Sam Houston State tied for second. Leading the Bobcats was a crowded honor as Tyler Barnes-Wolf (77-73-75=225), Michael Carnes (74-75-76=225) and Corey Roberson (72-72-81=225) each tied for the team lead and 17th overall, while Oscar Zetterwall (77-75-75=227) and Philip Krebsbach (82-72-76=230) kept the team numbers tight throughout the tournament. Tournament winner Scott Kelly led the Bearkats as Fergal Rafferty (75-74-76=225), Brandon Frankhouser (74-74-80=228), Scooter Jefferson (75-76-79=230) and Steward Bannatyne (83-73-79=235). Top performances in the tournament were shot by Russell Helson of Lamar, Simon Merry of UTSA and Kyle Robbins of Stephen F. Austin each with a 68. This concludes the end of the season for the men's team, but all seven players will be back in uniform for the Colonels next season. FINAL STATS Team Leaders 1. Lamar 298, 278, 290 - 866 (+2) T2.
