THIBODAUX, La. - The accolades keep rolling in for senior Kareem Moore and junior Ladarius Webb who were named the Sports Network's co-defensive players of the week and LSWA defensive players of the week after combining for four interception returns for touchdowns in the Colonels 58-0 win over Northwestern State. "Both of them (Moore and Webb) are very outstanding young men that put the extra time in both on and off the field," said head coach Jay Thomas. "We are very proud of them and their accomplishments." It was Moore's first time receiving the Sports Network award, while it was Webb's second time this season getting the award. Webb was named the Sports Network's Defensive Player of the Week following the Colonels 16-14 win over D-I FBS Rice in which he intercepted three pass and returned one for a touchdown. The LSWA defensive player of the week award is the first for any Colonel this season and the first time Nicholls has received the award since Cory Vavala accomplished the feat in 2005 in his role in the Colonels victory over Sam Houston State. The tandem's awards so far include two national defensive players of the week honors, SLC defensive players of the week, and the LSWA defensive players of the week accolade. The releases from the Sports Network and LSWA are below: FCS players of the week highlighted by Nicholls State pair Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Eastern Washington receiver Aaron Boyce, Nicholls State defensive backs Kareem Moore and Ladarius Webb and Georgia Southern place kicker Jesse Hartley were named as the Sports Network national players of the week. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Aaron Boyce, Eastern Washington, Sophomore, WR, 6-2, 205, Kent, Wash. Boyce helped Eastern Washington come within seconds of an upset of Montana on the road with a school-record 17 receptions for 232 yards and one touchdown in the Eagles' 24-23 loss to the Grizzlies. Boyce's 17 catches were the fourth- most ever in a Big Sky Conference football game. David Pandt of Montana State holds the record with 21 in 1986 against EWU. The 232 yards was the third best performance in Eagle history, just short of the record of 264 by Jason Anderson in a 1994 loss to Montana. Four EWU players had previous caught 13 passes in a single game. Boyce hauled in a 37-yard scoring strike from quarterback Matt Nichols in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 17-14 lead. DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Kareem Moore, Nicholls State, Senior, DB, 6-2, 203, Okolona, Miss. Ladarius Webb, Nicholls State, Junior, DB/QB, 5-11, 180, Opelika, Ala. Moore and Webb helped combine for what is believed to be an NCAA record in a single half when they combined for four interceptions and returned all of them for touchdowns in the first half of Nicholls State's 58-0 Southland Conference victory over Northwestern State. Moore opened the action with an interception about two minutes into the game, which he returned 49 yards for a touchdown to give the Colonels a 7-0 lead. Moore then made it 17-0 with four minutes left when he took another pick-off 65 yards to the end zone. Webb got the third scoring interception for Nicholls State in the first minute of the second period, running it back 42 yards to make it a 31-0 game. Webb's 72-yard interception return with 2:33 remaining in the first half extended the lead to 44-0. The four TD interception returns tied an NCAA single-game record that had been set by Houston in 1987 against Texas and was equaled in 2003 by Northwestern State against Southeastern Louisiana. Webb, who also has played quarterback for the Colonels this season, also earned defensive player of the week honors after Nicholls State's 16-14 win over Rice in the opening week of the season. SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Jesse Hartley, Georgia Southern, Junior, PK, 5-11, 202, Tallahassee, Fla. Hartley drilled a 54-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift Georgia Southern to a 41-38 home victory over South Dakota State. It was the longest game-winning kick in school history and was the longest successful field goal for an Eagle kicker since Chris Chambers nailed a 57-yarder at Oregon State in 1999. Hartley also hit a 24-yard field goal earlier in the game and was 5-of-5 on extra points, scoring 11 points. LSWA Release: HESTER OF LSU, NICHOLLS STATE SAFETY TANDEM AND WILSON OF ULM EARN LSWA WEEKLY COLLEGE FOOTBALL HONORS BATON ROUGE -- Nicholls State's safety duo of Kareem Moore and Ladarius Webb don't mind sharing another honor Monday as they were both named Defensive Players of the Week in the weekly awards announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. LSU's Jacob Hester, who had a career night in leading LSU back from 10-points down to allow the No. 1 team in college football to defeat Florida Saturday night in Tiger Stadium was named the Offensive Player of the Week and place kicker Cole Wilson kept his lengthy field-goal streak alive, earning Special Teams Player of the Week from the voting panel of the LSWA. Moore and Webb, earlier in the day named the Southland Conference defensive POW, each had two interception returns for touchdowns in a 58-0 win over Northwestern State on Saturday. Moore, a senior from Okolona, Miss., and Webb, a junior from Opelika, Ala., tied the NCAA record for most interception returns in a game by combining for the four. Moore had two in the first quarter of 49 and 65-yards, while Webb's second quarter TD pickoffs were for 42 and 72 yards. Ironically, both had 114 return yards for the game. Hester rushed for a career-high 106 yards and scored the game-winning TD with just over a minute left in LSU's 28-24 win over Florida. Hester, on 23 attempts, averaged 4.6 yards per carry against a Florida defense that entered the game allowing just 63 yards per contest. Down 24-21 late in the fourth quarter, LSU gave the ball to Hester twice for fourth-down conversions. Hester carried the ball eight times on LSU's final possession, gaining 39 of his cards in the final 15 minutes. Wilson, a senior from St. Francisville, La., hit three field goals for the Warhawks in their 30-13 victory over Arkansas State this past weekend. Wilson has now made 17-consecutive field goals, tying him for the second-longest streak in the NCAA. Wilson's first attempt put ULM on the board after ASU scored 13 unanswered points to open the game and it was the beginning of 30 unanswered points for the Warhawks. Wilson is 6-of-6 on field goals this season. #### |
