Joel Weiss enters his second season as an assistant coach for J.P. Piper and the Colonels. Prior to accepting the position at Nicholls, Weiss served as an assistant at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas where he helped guide the Hill Toppers to a 24-6 overall record in 2006-07, including a 10-2 league mark, a Heartland Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. With St. Edward's, his main duties included opponent scouting, film exchange, and academic monitoring. While in Austin, Weiss was the manager of operations for Hoop Zone and also coached the 17 & Under Hoop Zone AAU team for two years. In addition, he served as an assistant to the communications director for the NBA developmental team - the Austin Toros. In that role, he compiled statistics, prepared game notes for NBA scouts and wrote and edited game stories. Before moving to Texas, the Calif.-native worked with two California high schools, serving as the head coach of Claremont High School's fall program in 2004 and as an assistant at Newbury Park High School from 2002-03. In 2000, Weiss was an assistant coach at Glendale College in Glendale, Calif., and helped steer the Vaqueros to the Elite 8 State Tournament - the highest tournament finish in school history. Weiss made his coaching debut at his alma mater, leading the Agoura High School summer league in 1998 and 1999. In two years, his teams earned a combined 18-9 mark and a league championship (1998). A two-sport athlete, Weiss played one season of collegiate football at Leigh University before transferring to Claremont McKenna College where he was a three-year member of the basketball team and two-year member of the football team. Weiss is single and resides in Thibodaux. |
