THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls head coach baseball coach Chip Durham released the 2008 baseball schedule on Thursday afternoon, which features 12 home contests in non-conference play at the newly renovated Ray E. Didier Field. The Colonels will open the 2008 season with six of their first seven games at home with the season opener coming against former conference and in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe in a three game series that begins on February 22 at 6:30 p.m. The following two games will be played on Feb.23 and Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. and 1 pm. After a trip to Louisiana College on Feb. 26, Nicholls will return home to host New Orleans on Feb. 27 and Murray State in a three-game series starting on Feb. 29 and ending on May 2. "The team is excited about the upcoming season, especially opening up at home in front of our own fans," said Durham about the schedule. "We are playing some tough non-conference opponents in an effort to better prepare us for SLC play." Of the non-conference opponents that Nicholls will play, New Orleans and Texas A&M won their league championships a year ago with the Privateers winning the Sun Belt and the Aggies conquering the Big 12. The Aggies are ranked No. 22 in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Poll, while LSU, who the Colonels play on Apr. 15, are ranked No. 30. New Orleans also received votes, while Tulane, who Nicholls will play twice this season including a home match on Apr. 2, garnered some recognition in the poll as well. Southland Conference play will kickoff at home for the Colonels as they host Texas State on March 14-16 with the first game starting on Mar. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Besides hosting Texas State in 2008 league action, Nicholls will play Lamar (Apr. 4-6), Northwestern State (Apr. 18-20), Stephen F. Austin (Apr. 25-27), and Southeastern La. (May 15-17) in conference play. The series against the Lions will close out the regular season.
