PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES OF STUDENT-ATHLETES

A student-athlete will not be eligible for intercollegiate athletic participation if that individual accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind.

If a student-athlete's name or picture appears on commercial items, such as a T-shirt, trading cards, poster, or photograph or is used to promote a commercial product without the student-athlete's knowledge or permission, the student-athlete and the University are required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain the student-athlete's eligibility.

It is permissible for an educational, charitable, or non-profit organization to use a student-athlete's appearance, name, or picture to promote its charitable or educational activities provided the organization signs an agreement, issued through the Compliance Office, in which certain conditions are specified.

Frequently, booster clubs will request that an enrolled student-athlete or team attend a function sponsored by the booster organization. To have student-athletes present, you must first discuss the details of the event with a member of the coaching staff or the Compliance Office. An example in which this is permissible includes holding a reception at the home of a booster with it being considered as an "occasional home meal," which is permissible under NCAA Bylaws.

It is not permissible for prospects to be invited to alumni club functions. They may attend alumni sponsored functions open to all area high school students in which representatives from the University's Admissions Office make a presentation. If a prospect should attend an alumni function, which is open to the public, they may not be provided complimentary admission, introduced, nor approached for recruiting purposes.
